Another exciting day!

Hola,

First things first.  I must introduce you to my new love.  My bike.  It has all a boy could ever want.  It possesses a basket, tall handle bars, a bell, a tall seat, spray painted imperfections, and a sweet rack on the back that can transport a small Asian friend for a short distance.  I am becoming quite attached...

Sophia took us out to dinner last night and out to downtown Guangzhou today.  She took us on the metro.  It is the cleanest easiest to use public transportation that i have ever seen.  I have only used New York's, Italy's, and the poor excuse for a public transportation system that LA claims to have.  It was clean, effective, and air conditioned.  Our first stop was The Guang dong Museum of Folk Handicrafts that was housed within a temple.  It was filled with many little shows of sculpture, embroidery, and ceramics.  I was more taken by the temple itself than the artwork.  These temples possess something i have never experienced before.  Coming from a Mexican-American background i have experienced Catholic and Christian places of worship.  Although Europe had some breathtaking churches, none of them compare to this.  They were vast and housed some of the art that i can only dream of creating, but this temple touched me in a different way.  I felt a nostalgia for something that i never actually experienced, nor comprehend, or ever will.  I know those are awkward abstract words that don't even begin to verbalize my feelings, it is just difficult to describe the serenity and perfection of this place.  Nature and vast earth creations have the capacity to do this to me, but i have never been moved by architecture before.

We then went to The Museum of the Nan-Yue King in the Western-Han Dynasty.  It was full of ancient relics and excavated tombs that we got to see inside of.  After that we went to "Old GAFA.," which i believe was the former location of our school and now houses GAFA's graduate program.  We wandered through the campus and saw they're huge sculpture garden.  There was also a show going on in their three story university art museum.  It was the 1st Grand Exhibition of Primary and Secondary School Teachers Art in Guangdong Province.  It was a beautiful show and i took many photos of the work.  After that we accompanied Sophia to buy some books then headed back to GAFA.

I am really enjoying it here.  The living conditions are good, the food is great, the people are wonderful, and now i look forward to the education.  One of the few things that strikes me time after time is the stares i that get.  It is slightly awkward and entertaining due to the fact that everyone does it.  Not just children or a few curious people, but everyone.  Definitely pins the foreigner sign on my forehead.  It really exemplifies that in California we live in a rich diverse area.  Perhaps we take that for granted?  I am an alien here, an oddity.  I am this because of my ethnicity, my height, my beard, and my willingness to put myself here.

Chancellor's Gallery

Hola,

A quick announcement for you all.  As i mentioned earlier in my blog while i was in Italy, some student art was chosen to be displayed at the Chancellor's Gallery in the CSU Chancellor's Office in downtown Long Beach.  They will display it for a year and frame it for us.  These are landscape paintings we created while in Italy.

This is my painting they chose.

This is Nick Skoug's painting that got chosen for the show.  It is of me painting in the park and i am painting the painting above that got chosen.

If you would like to check out all the art pieces that got chosen, then check out:

More shopping in the village

Hey again,

We went off to the village again, and i took my camera this time.  We bought some hot noodles and i learned how to order them.  They were delicious like everything else in this country.  I also went to the art shop and picked up all my paints, an easel art box for landscape painting, brushes, and some canvases.  Everything is very affordable and large tubes of paint are about $1.50.  So life is still good here and please enjoy the photos.

My room

I finally got my room all set up. It is very simple and i have a mosquito net.  I spent about two days cleaning it, its not perfect my any means, but pretty good for my standards. Wow, I almost sounded ungrateful there...this room is actually larger than my room at my uncle's house in Hawaiian Gardens while i was going to Long Beach.  Not to mention that most of the students here share their rooms with 2 to 3 other students.  Their rooms are the same size as ours and 2 rooms share one bathroom.  I am very happy with my luxury room and here are a few photos.  If you click on the individual photos they will enlarge so you can see them clearer.

Hey gang!

Hope all is well with you since i last posted.  Yet again i sit by my balcony stealing wireless internet and being blasted by my new awesome fan.  Its pretty sunny and blazing hot...which may i add is quite perfect for my new found desert friends.  I purchased three cactus plants and they now reside on my window sill.  They are cute...  (Lauren would be so proud)

First things first, if anyone decides to call me. This is my phone number here: 13416100829. If you would like to call me, remember that to make any international calls, you must dial 011 and the country code for China is 86. Therefore to call me you should do the following:

011 + 86 + 13416100829

Don't worry about taking up my minutes because (lucky for me) I get free incoming calls! Which means that I can talk to you as long as your calling card holds out! If you want to know what time it is here this is what you do: add 3 hours to the time at home and make it the opposite. Example, if it is 3:00 pm in Cali, it will be 6:00 am (of the following day) my time.

So, i made my title of this post quite proud in the past two days.  I have been supporting the economy here quite well and aspire to keep doing it for this upcoming year.  Our new friends Alex and Gertie have been showing us around and getting us situated to the way of life.

Yesterday morning Gertie took us to Guangzhou University which is about a 15 minute walk away.  There we ate some fried duck over rice and it was delicious.  Afterwards we went and purchased phones and sim cards.  The phones here are prepaid and with minutes it came to about 60 dollars (NOT BAD AT ALL).  After that we went to a huge Wal Mart type store that is underground and resembles a bomb shelter.  It was very large and we were able t pretty much buy everything we needed there.  Gertie was quite embarrassed with my shenanigans and tended to walk ahead of me...apparently carrying a broom on your backpack is not fashionable here.  We headed back to our rooms and rested for a while before our next adventure.

Mike, Maria, and Spencer are the former students from CSULB to study at GAFA, they were friends with Alex.  Alex has been kind enough to take us under his wing and pass on to us some of the past exchange student's belongings.  They left us a bike, tea sets, and a bug zapper.  The bike was a perfect fit for Jessica, but what about me!?  Alex took us to the painting department and the village.  The art department is very impressive with many talented representatinal painters.  It is a bit intimidating, but a higher caliber will make me work harder.  The village is a small community that has art shops and restaurants.  We ate there again.  Beef, vegetables, and rice...and it was terrific again.  Alex was having his bike worked on so i went bike shopping and found a beauty.  It was 235 Yuan with a basket installed.  That comes to about 35 dollars.  This spray painted second hand beauty stands tallest around all other bikes on campus.  They had to raise my handle bars and seat to the highest point.  We stopped at some art shops and i picked up a Lucian Freud book.  We then biked back in a hurry to meet up with Gertie again.

Gertie took us to the pool that is about 200 feet from our dorms.  I have a feeling that Jessica and i are going to be visiting it often...and many small Asian people will scurry in fear of my hairiness.  Again she took us for a walk and we saw a small temple as well the rest of the village.  It is full of fruit stands and restaurants.  I picked up some cactus plants there and then we had dinner.  Pepper chicken over rice.  Spicy and amazing again.

So today we returned back to the store and picked up some last things.  I am almost completely settled into my room and only need some art supplies.  once my room is all organized i shall load some photos.

China!

Hey there all!

Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.  I am currently on my balcony of my dorm room in Guangzhou at the Guangzhou Academy Fine Arts (GAFA).  I have my newly purchased 108 Yuen fan blasting air on my sweaty back.  It is muggy here, its about 85 degrees and moist.  Behind my blog window i have a pirated version of The Hulk 2 playing and all the students are hard at work playing basketball downstairs.  So, bounce, bounce, bounce in the morning and at night.  Jessica and i had an 11 hour flight to Tokyo then another 4 hours to Guangzhou.  We arrived this morning at 2 am to the dorms.  We crashed out and woke up pretty early to catch some wonderful breakfast at 7/11.  We had awesome dumplings and rice wrapped in leaves like a tamale.  It was pretty scrumptious and nothing like the junk at our 7/11's.  We spent most of the day cleaning, these rooms were left in pretty bad shape.  We had a bit of an orientation with Ms. Li today and tomorrow we are going to get a sim card for my phone.  Like i said earlier we picked up a fan at one of the neighboring colleges from their shopping center, which is fantastic and huge.  We are on the University Island that houses 10 different Universities.  So nothing too exciting has happened yet, but school does start on the 1st and a new adventure is at hand.  Here are a few photos with more to come...

Its hot all the time...this is my China face
